A Transient Solid State Switch (TSS) is a semiconductor device used to protect a circuit from transient overvoltage damage. It protects sensitive components in the circuit mainly by absorbing and dispersing high energy transient overvoltages in the circuit instantaneously. TSS, also known as surge suppression thyristor, is a PNPN junction four-layer device made of semiconductor technology, whose voltammetry characteristics are similar to those of thyristors, with typical switching characteristics.

In the selection, the following parameters need to be considered: on-voltage (VDRM), breakdown voltage (VRRM), response time and static capacitance (C). The basic principle of selection is to ensure that the on-voltage is greater than the operating voltage on the circuit to provide adequate protection.
